About DMTC

Quality musical theatre, in the heart of Durham.

Durham Musical Theatre Company brings together people who share a love of music, performance and live theatre. Based in Durham City, we welcome members of all ages and backgrounds, with opportunities to get involved both on stage and behind the scenes.

For us, putting on a show is a shared endeavour. Every production brings together the skills, enthusiasm and commitment of our performers, production teams and backstage members. From the first singing rehearsal to the final performance, everyone has a part to play.

A company with a story to tell

Our roots stretch back to 1908, when the Durham Amateur Operatic Society was founded. Its first production, H.M.S. Pinafore, followed in 1909, beginning a history that has taken in Gilbert and Sullivan, pantomime, classic Broadway shows and contemporary musicals.

In 2003, members voted to adopt the name Durham Musical Theatre Company, reflecting the breadth of the work we perform. Today, we remain proud of that heritage while looking forward to the next production.

Bringing musicals to life

Our productions have ranged from Fiddler on the Roof and My Fair Lady to Sweeney Todd, CHESS, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Prince of Egypt. We enjoy the variety musical theatre offers: comedy, drama, familiar favourites and opportunities for audiences to discover something new.

Since first performing at Gala Durham in 2002, we have brought many different stories to its stage. Each show presents its own challenges and gives our members the chance to develop their skills, work together and share the results with an audience.

There’s more than one way to take part

You don’t have to be a performer to contribute to DMTC. Costumes, props, stage crew, hair and make-up all help turn rehearsals into a finished production. The work behind the scenes is an essential part of what audiences see on stage.

Whether you are interested in performing or would like to help backstage, we would be pleased to hear from you. Our membership page explains more about joining, rehearsals and auditions.
