Meet Ramses: A Journey of Loyalty and Burden

DMTC would like to introduce Steven Berry, who will be playing the part of Ramses!

Can you describe Ramses in 3 words?

“Loyal, conflicted, overburdened.”

What do you enjoy most about playing Ramses?

“I enjoy playing characters who develop as people along with the story; Ramses starts off a young man, loyal to his brother (despite their scraps) but the burden of responsibility of becoming the future Pharoah of Egypt weighs heavy upon him. Ramses becomes quite bitter and villainous for a while, but from my point of view playing the character I can understand why. I think it’s a great script, the music is fabulous, and like Ramses I suppose I feel there is a weight of responsibility on me to sensitively portray this historically significant figure from Egyptian and Biblical history.”

If Ramses had a Spotify playlist, what song would be on it?

“I Just Can’t Wait to be King from The Lion King – no explanation needed!”

Why should people come see “The Prince of Egypt”?

Because it’s DMTC’s next production and DMTC productions are always well worth seeing! This is a much more physical show, for everyone, than we’re used to staging – how people move and interact on stage really brings so much to the story and the scene setting. We have a fabulous orchestra, the staging really opens the space – we’re using digital LED video wall technology as many productions do these days with amazing projections to set the scenes, and we have a large ensemble cast with truly amazing vocal talents. The rendering of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey’s famous song in the show will, I think, be a particular highlight.”
