Important programme updates

It is with great sadness that DMTC has to announce that its March 2021 postponed production of “Chess” is unable to proceed as planned. Continued covid-19 outbreaks have made it impossible to rehearse the show in time. The Company feels that we have potentially such a strong production waiting to be seen that cancelling the show is not an option. Therefore, “Chess” has been postponed again until the week of 29th March – 2nd April 2022. The GALA Theatre box office will be contacting all ticket holders to offer replacement tickets or refunds. This decision has not been made lightly, but we have to be compliant with all the health regulations currently in place whilst having due regard for the safety of our cast and patrons.

In the intervening period DMTC is proposing to stage a socially distanced concert to raise money in aid of all our wonderful NHS Staff and Carers, who have given themselves tirelessly to the protection of the public. We all owe them so much. This will probably take place towards the end of May / beginning of June 2021. More news will follow as our plans develop. Watch this space for further updates.

We are delighted that DMTC has been given one of the very few licences to be granted in the UK allowing us to stage the wonderful Disney musical “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. The show has never been staged in England before but it is very popular in the USA where numerous productions have been presented. We will be one of the first companies in the UK allowed to perform it. The music was written by Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast”, “The Little Mermaid”) with lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked”, “The Baker’s Wife”). The show has a wonderful score that needs a great singing company to do it justice. This powerful score includes the brilliant songs: “Out There”, “God Help the Outcasts”, “Hellfire” and “Someday”. It is a highly emotional piece of musical theatre and DMTC is honoured and privileged to have been given the opportunity to stage this remarkable piece for the people of Durham. This show will be staged in GALA in the week 19th – 25th March 2023.
