We are excited to finally announce details of our 2019 production at GALA.
We have been granted one of the few licenses to stage the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber / Tim Rice hit musical “Evita“. It will take place from Sunday 31st March – Saturday 6th April 2019 at the GALA Theatre. Kathleen Knox will return to choreograph her 14th show with DMTC. The Musical Directors will be Malcolm Moffat and Martin Dack. They will share the rehearsals, and Malcolm will conduct the show. We are delighted that Fred Wharton is returning to direct this show.
The show is like “Titanic“, in that the company splits into three groups – the workers, the soldiers and the aristocracy. We therefore need a very large company to be able to do justice to this amazing score. The show is sung through and there is a lot to learn. Small sections are in Latin and Spanish, although the bulk is in English!
There are 5 major principal roles: Evita and Che, Peron, Magaldi and the Mistress. There are also 7 Chorus Principals (3 women and 4 men), who will portray several different smaller roles throughout the production. We also need a choir of about 8-10 singing children. All of these characters will be auditioned.
Some important dates:
Director’s Introductory Talk – Tuesday 4th September 7.15pm at Durham City Rowing Club
During this talk Fred will explain his concept for staging the show and talk about the characterisations of the major roles. Our choreographer and musical directors will also be there to answer any questions.
Sing Rehearsals Begin – Tuesday 11th September 7.15pm at Blue Coat School, Newton Hall
Singing rehearsals will begin and continue on Tuesday evenings up to the end of the year. Floor work will then begin in early January.
This is a rare opportunity to perform one of musical theatre’s iconic pieces. Evita is 40 years old this year, and it made an overnight star of Elaine Paige.
If you would like to part in what will surely be a fantastic show – then we look forward to seeing you at the Director’s Introductory Talk in September!
